I’ve been thinking a lot lately of the intertwining of giving presentations and Risk. What do those 2 topics have to do with each other, you may ask?
Think about your own eagerness to give a presentation in front of a group. Many people shy away from the opportunity, giving a multitude of reasons – I’m too uncomfortable, no one could possibly be interested in anything I have to say, what if I stumble and look bad, I don’t have time, and I just don’t want to.
Other people jump at the chance to give a presentation, saying yes because of a variety of reasons – I’m increasing my visibility, honing my skills, being seen as the ‘go-to’ expert, and sharing my message.
If you think of all these different responses and add the element of Risk Assessment, it becomes quite interesting. Are you risk averse? If so, you may tend to fall in the first camp, erring on the side of avoiding all the potential negative consequences that may happen if you say Yes to a speaking opportunity.
If you are in the latter camp, you may be more risk tolerant, seeing an invitation as an opportunity, not a threat.
If you’re like many people and have never thought about which side of the “Risk Coin” you may be on, just think about how you’d feel if you were offered the chance to give a presentation 5 days from now – would you say YES with open arms and get to work on it or NO and hope you’re never asked again?
Your answer may reflect how you handle other areas of your life!
